Did Someone Say Cake? - Part 1
Did Someone Say Cake? - Part 1
Who doesn't love cake?
As the Intro writes, "Whether it's the kind you eat or the colorful fabric variety, we're all in."
And yes, we are. We hope you will be too. Did Someone Say Cake includes a dozen quilts that are colorful, versatile, and range from easy to intermediate. You just need to decide where to start - which quilt? Which layer cake? Which should you choose first?
Moda Bake Shop Did Someone Say Cake? This book will be in shops on Tuesday, February 1st.
Today's cake-tasting menu shares the confections of three Moda Bake Shop Chefs. We asked each designer to share a little bit about themselves, a little cake Q & A.
Let's start with Amanda Wilbert, who you might know as Pieced Just Sew.
This is Spice Cake. The quilt finishes at 80" x 80", and it's made with a Layer Cake of Cider by BasicGrey, and yardage for background, binding and backing.
What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? All of them! I have too many favorites to pick just one!
What is your favorite kind of cake? Red velvet!
Do you have a recipe to share or link to? No, the only thing I like to "bake" are quilts!
How long have you been a MBS Chef? Since 2018.
My favorite part of making a quilt is... piecing the blocks, with picking out fabrics a close second!
My least favorite part of making a quilt is... making the quilt backing.
Amanda Wilbert quilts as Pieced Just Sew, and her Sugar Twist quilt appeared in The Best of Moda Bake Shop book. For more with Amanda:

Nicola Dodd of Cake Stand Quilts.
Nicola's Blossom quilt is made with one Layer Cake of Spring Brook by Corey Yoder, and yardage for background, binding and backing. Blossom finishes at 50" x 50."
What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? I’m tempted to say the next one I sew with, but there is one that stands out. While I made my quilt for the book with Corey Yoder’s Spring Brook, one of Corey’s early collections, Sundrops, inspired my first sampler quilt, the Spellbound Sampler, which was a real turning point in my design work.
What is your favorite kind of cake? And do you have a recipe to share or link to? My Auntie Pat’s Coffee and Walnut cake is my absolute favourite, but failing that, Nigella Lawson has an acceptably lovely recipe for Coffee and Walnut Layer Cake.
How long have you been a MBS Chef? I’ve just checked and my first project posted back in February, 2016, so that’s nearly six years!
My favorite part of making a quilt is... Pretty much all of it - though see my next answer!. I love every part of it - the initial sketch, some delicious fabric procrastination, holding a finished block in my hands, then chain-piecing a few more and arranging them (and re-arranging them) into a quilt top. It’s all magical.
My least favorite part of making a quilt is... Basting! No-one likes basting! (But if anyone does, can you send me their details?)
Using a palette of Bella Solids, Nicola's quilt was published in Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine. (Image by Love Patchwork & Quilting.). (The colors used are Flamingo, Betty's Pink, Afternoon, Summer Sky, Tranquil Aqua, Dusty Jade, Flax and Off White.)

And Lisa Jo Girodat of Neverland Stitches.
Cartwheels and Roundoffs is made with Flowers For Freya by Linzee Kull McCray, and it finishes at 63" x 81". One Layer Cake and yardage for background, borders, binding and backing.
What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? Swell Christmas by Urban Chiks. I am a sucker for a Christmas Quilt and an old fashioned Santa!
What is your favorite kind of cake? Graham Cracker Cake - it's an old family recipe that has been handed down over the past 5 generations.
Do you have a recipe to share or link to? Okay - My Great Aunt Isabel is going to haunt me, but it's too yummy not to share - Graham Cracker Cake Recipe.
How long have you been a MBS Chef? Since the Summer of 2018.
My favorite part of making a quilt is... Piecing the blocks I designed and seeing the image in my mind come to life.
My least favorite part of making a quilt is... "Quilt Wrestling", also known as binding.
This is Lisa Jo's finished quilt from this past summer's Moda Bake Shop Summer In The Garden Quilt-along.
Washi Tape - Lisa Jo's quilt from the Best of Moda Bake Shop, published July, 2020.
