A dozen quilts.  A dozen layer cakes.  From thirteen Moda Bake Shop Chefs.

CT MBS Cake - Book Cover

Did Someone Say Cake?  Compiled by Lissa Alexander, published by Martingale, this book is in shops now.

As we share the last three quilts in the book, let's lead off with Julie Hirt's Battenberg.

CT MBS Cake 4 - Battenburg by Julie Hirt

Named for the famous British Battenberg cake, this quilt measures 58" x 72", and is made with one Layer Cake of Smol by Kimberly Kight for Ruby Star Society.  Additional yardage for sashing, cornerstones, binding and backing is required.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake?  My all time favorite layer cake is Helly Betty (Chloe’s Closet). It was released when I initially ventured into sewing and was the first fabric line I fell hard for.

What is your favorite kind of cake?  All time favorite cake is a classic Betty Crocker Pineapple Upside-Down Cake - this recipe.  It's a simple recipe that brings good memories and hits the spot.

How long have you been a MBS Chef?  I’ve been working with MBS since 2013!

My favorite part of making a quilt is... Choosing a pattern and deciding which fabrics to use.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... it's probably cutting or even making the binding. Those are more chores/tasks and I like the creative side of it.

CT MBS Cake 4 - Color Weave Julie Hirt

Julie's Color Weave quilt was featured in the Best of Moda Bake Shop book, published in 2020.

Our second Chef today is Sharla Krenzel, the Did Someone Say Cake? cover girl.

CT MBS Cake 4 - Dayna Sharla Krenzel

It's all about the stars, chains and plaid - all of which Sharla loves.  Finishing at 60" x 60", this quilt was made with one Layer Cake of Happy Days by Sherri & Chelsi, and additional yardage for the blocks, border, sashing and backing.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? You're going to make us pick just one?!?! So hard to chose, but I would have to say Little Black Dress by Basic Grey. It was so different and striking.

What is your favorite kind of cake?  Anything chocolate!  My go-to recipe for family dinners is Eagle Brand's Chocolate Sheet Cake. It's a recipe I clipped from a magazine many years ago and it's still one of the best.

How long have you been a MBS Chef?  Since April 2015.

My favorite part of making a quilt is... The excitement of starting a new quilt - choosing the fabric and pattern, and then sewing the first few blocks.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... Binding!!!

CT MBS Cake 4 - Sharla Krenzel Lightbulb Moment

Sharla's A Lightbulb Moment quilt was one of those featured in the Best of Moda Bake Shop book.

And finally, Diane Brinton and Audrey Mann are the mother-daughter duo at The Cloth Parcel.

CT MBS Cake 4 - Beaded Bracelets Audrey & Diane

Beaded Bracelets.  Gentle curves in each block create a ripple effect on this 51" x 67" quilt.  Made with May Morris Studio from the V&A Archives, this quilt requires one Layer Cake and yardage for binding and backing.

First - Audrey.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake? I really loved Basic Grey's Evergreen line.  We used that layer cake for our Woodland Wander quilt, and it continues to be a favorite.

What is your favorite kind of cake?  Black Forest!

How long have you been a MBS Chef? Since 2017.

My favorite part of making a quilt is... Cutting and piecing the first few blocks is my favorite part of making a quilt.  Seeing everything come together for the first time is magic!

Diane: My favorite part of making a quilt is taking the design from my head to the cutting table, then sewing those first few pieces together to make sure it looks as cool as I had imagined.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... Binding is my least favorite part.  Once everything is quilted, it seems like it should be done.

CT MBS Cake 4 - Definitely Positive MBS Audrey

This is Audrey's Definitely Positive Quilt, shared on the Moda Bake Shop in 2017.  (It was made with a Jelly Roll of Voyage by Kate Spain.)

And Mom, Diane Brinton.

What is your all-time favorite Moda Layer Cake?  Moda's Regent Street Lawn.  (All of them?)

What is your favorite kind of cake?  Death by Chocolate.

How long have you been a MBS Chef? Since 2017. Five years!

My favorite part of making a quilt is... My favorite part of making a quilt is taking the design from my head to the cutting table, then sewing those first few pieces together to make sure it looks as cool as I had imagined.

My least favorite part of making a quilt is... My least favorite part of making a quilt is loading the top, batting, and backing on the long arm for quilting.

In just a few weeks, Audrey and Diane will be celebrating the publication of their first "solo" book, Piece & Love.
